Why shred old papers

Old bank statements, bills and medical paperwork carry account numbers, birth dates and other personal details. Scammers look for that information, and older adults are frequent targets. Shredding papers you no longer need is a simple way to lower that risk. For more ways to protect yourself, read our scam prevention articles.

What to keep

Some papers should stay out of the shred pile. Hold on to:

  • Your original will, trust documents and powers of attorney
  • Health care directives
  • Deeds, titles and recent tax returns

Not sure whether to keep something? Bring it to us before you shred it, and we will take a look.
