Veteran, Widowed Spouse or Disabled Adult Child (Any May be a Claimant)

  • Veteran, Widowed Spouse, or Disabled Adult Child (Any of these may be a claimant)
  • The Veteran must have served at least ninety (90) consecutive days on Active Duty, including at least one (1) day during a wartime period.
  • The Veteran must have received a discharge other than dishonorable.
  • A physician must certify that the claimant is housebound and requires assistance from another individual. This assistance may involve services provided by Home Health Care, Assisted Living, or Nursing Home Care.
  • A married Veteran claimant must have insufficient assets, excluding the home, car, and personal belongings.
  • The claimant must meet specific income requirements.
  • The widowed spouse must have been married to the Veteran at the time of the Veteran’s death or must have had children with the Veteran and never remarried. (Minor or disabled children may qualify for benefits on their own.)
  • The widowed spouse must have been living with the Veteran at the time of the Veteran’s death, unless the separation was due to medical or military reasons. (Some exceptions may apply for separations resulting from abuse.)

2019 Maximum Pension Rates for Aid and Attendance:

  • Single Veteran – $1,881 Per Month /$22,577 Per Year
  • Married Veteran – $2,230 Per Month /$26,766 Per Year
  • Widowed Spouse – $1,209 Per Month /$14,509 Per Year
  • Veteran Married to Veteran (Both AA) – $2,984 Per Month/$35,813 Per Year

Once awarded Aid and Attendance, a Veteran may obtain free medications, medical equipment, incontinence supplies, glasses, and hearing aids from the VA Hospital/Clinic via U.S. Mail, without needing to visit the VA in person.
